06 Jun What is breast augmentation with fat transfer?

Dr. Ron Somogyi answers your questions about this alternative to breast implants.

When we say “breast augmentation”, most people assume we’re referring to breast implants. While this is the most popular method of breast augmentation, many patients don’t know that an alternative option exists: breast augmentation with fat transfer.

As with every surgical option we offer, our team is dedicated to spending as much time as necessary with you to understand your goals and desires before making a personalized recommendation. That being said, there are some general questions that we can answer for you today, and Dr. Ron Somogyi is taking the time to do just that.

What is breast augmentation with fat transfer?

Rather than using an implant, breast augmentation with fat transfer utilizes a patient’s own fat—harvested using liposuction from one or more area(s) of the body—to increase the size of their breasts. At Somogyi Plastic Surgery, we offer breast augmentations using the Brava Autologous Fat Transfer system (Brava AFT).

What is the Brava Autologous Fat Transfer system?

In order for the fat transfer to be successful, there must be adequate space in which to inject the required volume of fat, and the recipient site must be healthy with adequate blood supply to allow the injected fat to “take” or survive; the Brava AFT device was developed to prepare the breast for fat transfer. The device consists of two polyurethane domes that fit comfortably over each breast, held in place by a comfortable sports bra. The domes are attached to a suction pump that produces negative pressure, which results in a slow and gentle expansion of the tissues to create a larger and more receptive matrix in which the fat can be injected. The device is typically worn for three weeks prior to surgery, most commonly for six consecutive hours per day.

Why would a patient choose breast augmentation with fat transfer over breast implants?

Breast augmentation with fat transfer can be a good choice if you desire a mild to moderate increase in breast size. Fat injection can typically produce a maximum augmentation of approximately one cup size. If larger volumes are desired, then breast implants should be considered.

Some other advantages of the procedure include the fact that the procedure is minimally invasive and involves the use of your own tissue. The techniques used also result in a total body reshaping (ie. the opportunity to remove fat from another area of the body), and minimal or no scarring.

What are the disadvantages when compared to breast implants?

The main disadvantage of breast augmentation with fat transfer relates to size – there is a limited degree of augmentation with this procedure. A certain proportion of the fat that is transferred may be reabsorbed by the body. While the use of the Brava system significantly reduces this risk, some of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed by the body, even in perfect circumstances. If a larger percentage of the fat is reabsorbed than expected, the enhancement will be less than expected. In these cases, we can discuss the benefits of repeating a second round of fat transfer.

What can I expect from the surgery itself?

Fat transfer to the breast is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anaesthesia. First, liposuction is performed to areas of unwanted fat. Next, the fat is prepared in syringes for injection into the breast using small needles. The use of these small needles means that the tiny scars around the breast are barely noticeable.

What is the recovery period associated with this surgery?

Following your surgery, swelling may be present for several weeks. You will be placed into a sports bra, and a compression garment will be applied to the areas where liposuction was performed to ensure your recovery is as comfortable and successful as possible.

When will I see final results?

The final results of your surgery should be apparent after 2-3 months.

How much does breast augmentation with fat transfer cost?

The cost of breast augmentation with fat transfer at Somogyi Plastic Surgery is $9,000 – $11,000.
